I was born a very special person because, unlike the majority of babies who get swarmed by his/her parents the moment they are born with celebration, I got nicked. I was born behind my twin sister who beat me out by 3 minutes, and while all eyes and glory were on her I was still non existent. So by the time I came out, 3 minutes later, the initial heart racing moments were over. Don't get me wrong, my parents were of course still as absolutely excited, loving, and delighted with me as they were with my sister. I may not have been the first to be admired, but I was the final victory. Two baby girls born the same day, 3 minutes apart, and raised by the same parents...how can it be that we are so different as people?
My sister, Taylor, is one of the best blessings in my life. She has also been one of the most interesting persons I have ever met in comparison to myself. Polar opposites is an understatement. Here is what I am talking about. Taylor is taller than me, and brunette with stick straight hair. She loves and plays sports, loves music, got straight As in school, follows the rules, likes vanilla over chocolate, argumentative, not - nor tries to be humorous, and relationship oriented. I however have blonde curly hair and lack 3.5 inches to her height. I would rather braid my hair then play a legit sport, love movies, chocolate only, very humorous, suffered to get Bs, yells hello to the world every morning, follows only the important rules, and values my single status. The list goes on. One would think that we would hate each other or not be civil when it comes to our opinions, values, and ideas of who our friends or boy interests are. My sister is my opposite on every level besides the fact she is a girl. That is why I am blessed.
I feel like I get to experience two people's lives. Mine and my sisters. Being that we live in the same house, attended school together, played on multiple sports teams alongside each other, as well as various other events, I got to see how someone who is the complete opposite of me reacts and embraces different situations, events, and life itself. I think that is one of the coolest things about having her as my twin. It actually has made me a more well rounded person and more understanding of someone's perspective on the world. It is as if I experience a new culture. Taylor is the other half of me. Us put together forms the perfect person. A person who feels every emotion, holds every view, and loves everything. My life is a journey and hers is another. Ours together is the adventure.
I love this opening sequence imagining your parents' reaction to your birth. Great stuff here.
ReplyDeleteMeg this piece was a joy to read! I enjoyed every minute of it. I agree with Lydia, the opening is fantastic. I really like that you find value in the trait make you different and that you use her outlook on life as a lens in which to view the world outside of yourself.
ReplyDeleteThe last line is also very nice.
I always wondered what it would be like to have a twin or even a sister. you usually imagine an instant best friend and support system. I like how you told what made you different but being together makes the perfect person
